During his career, Roger has gained an unusual breadth of experience across the construction sector, having been both the client as well as the contractor. He has worked in the UK, Hong Kong and China and now works across a number of countries. He has worked on a variety of projects, covering both civil engineering and building, across a wide range of sectors (including roads, rail, airports and hospitals) and sizes, from small projects up to multi-billion pound projects.
Roger joined Skanska in 2007, initially as Project Director for the £1 billion private finance initiative (PFI) redevelopment of St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London hospitals. He joined Skanska UK’s executive management team in 2008, serving as Chief Financial Officer from 2010 to 2015, before taking up a group role responsible for operational efficiency across Skanska's construction portfolio. This includes excellent project delivery, digital, research & innovation and knowledge.
A graduate of Cambridge University and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Roger spent his early career with Costain Civil Engineering, working on major roads contracts in the UK. In 1992, he joined MTR Corporation in Hong Kong as Client’s Representative/Project Manager, initially on the new airport railway and then the Tseung Kwan O Extension. From 2002, he oversaw the development of MTRC’s Shanghai office and led a PFI cable car tourism project in Hong Kong. In 2004, he joined BAA as Construction Director, looking after all construction works across BAA’s seven UK airports, with the exception of Heathrow’s Terminal 5.
Roger is a big advocate of modern methods of construction, including building information modelling, offsite fabrication and industrialisation. He believes these are the future for the construction industry and will deliver improved safety, quality and sustainability of building and infrastructure projects.
