Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability

This award recognises outstanding achievement and leadership in decarbonisation, reducing emissions across the organisation’s own activities as well as working to reduce carbon throughout the project lifecycle or in partnership with suppliers to tackle embodied carbon.

Blackwell Earthmoving
Anti-Idle Initiative

Blackwell's nomination showcases our pioneering Anti-Idle Initiative on HS2, driven by strong leadership and a deep-seated commitment to sustainability. Grounded in data-driven assessments and innovative technologies, our initiative has yielded demonstrable fuel usage and emissions reductions, earning us prestigious awards and recognition. Our collaboration and continuous improvement culture sets us apart, demonstrating exceptional performance and leadership in pursuing environmental stewardship within the construction industry.

Canary Wharf Contractors
Recycled Aggregate

Canary Wharf Contractors innovative approach to reducing carbon in concrete and embedding circular principles into our construction practices is industry leading. We have taken our position as a developer and understood that for Sustainability to be driven we have to drive and encourage our supply chain and also facilitate collaboration. By taking this 100-year old structure and turning into material which supports lower carbon and circular principles throughout our estate hopefully inspires others to understand what can be done with materials already in existence.

Cognition Land and Water
Barking Power Limited Gas Pipeline Decommissioning

Cognition Land and Water, a Carbon Neutral Company, has embedded sustainability across our business. On the Barking Power Gas Pipeline Project, we introduced an alternative, low-carbon design and optimised logistics, reducing project carbon by 75% against the original design. Working with 36 landowners along the 19.1km route, we used temporary, reusable track-mats, manufactured from recycled materials to minimise environmental damage, avoiding import of carbon-intensive aggregates and geotextile. Through applying sustainability and circular economy principles, we achieved 75% less carbon, reduced emissions and sustainable materials use. The project demonstrates what can be achieved through innovative design and considered project delivery.

John F Hunt
Commitment to long term decarbonisation

At John F Hunt we're leading the charge towards long-term decarbonization with tangible results. In 2023, we slashed our carbon emissions by 56%, setting a benchmark for sustainable progress. Our secret? Data-driven decision-making and a commitment to transparency. Recognizing the industry's resistance to change, we foster a culture of sustainability through regular ESG meetings and internal competitions. But we don't stop there. By investing in cutting-edge technology like carbon accounting platforms and telematics, we're revolutionizing data accuracy and management. Our achievements speak volumes: from significant reductions in steel and concrete emissions to pioneering reuse initiatives and embracing alternative fuels.

McGee
Committed to engineering a carbon future

Concrete actions and measurable results mark our journey towards sustainability. From pioneering construction techniques to fostering a culture of continuous improvement, every initiative is driven by our commitment to reducing emissions and creating a greener future. Investments in sustainable solutions, such as reusable temporary works and facade retention systems, evidence this commitment. We believe that to achieve the industry’s goal of net zero by 2050, we need increased collaboration and knowledge sharing, something we take pride in doing both within our business and beyond. We believe this is key to unlocking opportunities for ourselves, our clients, and the wider industry.

Milbank Concrete Products
A reduction in Scope 1&2 CO2 emissions by over 50%

Milbank has embarked on a journey to reduce its carbon footprint significantly and wants to be the UK’s most sustainable supplier of precast concrete products. The company’s target is net-zero for Scope 1&2 emissions by 2030, 20-years ahead of government targets. Success has been achieved in emissions reductions since the baseline was set in 2018, much from several key projects initiated in 2023, taking yearly CO2 expenditure from 900-tonnes to just over 300-tonnes, over a 50% reduction. Real changes to the industry’s footprint happen through collaboration, which is why it’s urging competitors and suppliers to join them on the journey.

Zero Marine Services
Zero Emissions Working Over Water Marine Service

At Zero Marine, sustainability is incorporated at the heart of our business. We utilise our first of its’ kind approach to working over the water in construction, saving over 30 tonnes of carbon emissions while also having far reaching environmental credentials in terms of pollution mitigation. We exceed client’s expectations in everything that we do, considering the total life cycle of the project in terms of the technology employed and the day-to-day operational carbon impacts. In turn, we have produced a step change in terms of carbon impact in a high-density area with the worst air pollution in the UK.
